The Mental Health Benefits of Cycling
Cycling is one of those sports that many people learn at a very young age and then take for grated ever since. There are loads of different types of bike riding, which is one reason why so many different people are able to take part. Something that most people are unaware of though when it comes to bike riding, is that it has long been used as a method of fighting depression. So why is that cycling is so good for your mental health?
Outdoors. To kick things off, most bike riding happens in the great outdoors. Studies have shown that staying trapped indoors actually makes depression worse and so being in the open air with lots of space is a great release. Additionally the natural surroundings and fresh air are invigorating and can easily lift your mood. Bikes are also a great deal easier to transport than other outdoor equipment like surfboards or used kayaks.
A better body. The causes of depression are incredibly varied, although many people quickly start to follow a similar pattern. People tend to either comfort eat or neglect their appearance when suffering from depression and this usually makes things worse. Cycling is a great aerobic sport that works to burn off fat and get you looking slimmer. Often people who start to feel better about their appearance, also start to feel better inside as well as their confidence grows.
Endophines. Exercise, and especially cycling, has been proven to release feel-good hormones into the body called endorphins. These endorphins enhance your senses, give you more energy and make you feel happier. So it is easy to see why tests show exercise to be among the most effective treatment methods for depression.
