Now here’s a company that makes a product that you don’t see every day.
Located on the sunny Gold Coast of Australia, Driftwood Timber Surf Co is family owned and operated by close friends of mine Jason and Tina Williams.
Driftwood Timber Surf Co specialise in creating surf inspired art with their collection ranging from Mini Malibu Photo Frames right through to their signature piece the Longboard Shaped Coffee Table.
I caught up with Jason and Tina last week for a long overdue beer with Jason and a coffee with Tina.. It’s amazing that it has been nearly 13 years!
“It started just for something to do one day” says Jason “I had just cut out a length of timber and put some tubular metal legs on it to make a coffee table. I asked Tina to draw a wave on it and then I put a coat of clear lacquor on it to protect the wood from damp and the picture from fading. Over the next couple of weeks, when anyone came over they would all say how sturdy the table was then 2 or 3 of them asked if we could make them one. It all just clicked it from there.”
Within months they were soon spending every weekend at the markets selling the tables and got so busy that Jason had to quit his job and do it full time.
Jason went onto say “The problem we had was that Tina spent so much time on each piece, in the early days for at least 3 months, Tina physically painted every Coffee Table, which took about 4 hours give or take. Now, we were selling an average of 10 to 11 Coffee Tables each weekend which meant that Tina spent all week and half the weekend just painting. Not to mention that I spent my week making them from scratch with only hand tools.
“We moved into the factory in Tweed Heads soon after that” Tina adds. “We had just spent about a year operating from underneath our house so when we got that space back, there was so much room.”
Within 3 years Tina and Jason had made the business so successful that unfortunately people starting copying their work. Imagine how hard that would have been. Flattered that their work was so good that someone wanted to make it yet upset that something that they created was being stolen, something had to change.
And change it did, Jason decided that if you can’t beat them, join them and he invested in a fully automated CNC overhead router that cut the time taken to make the surf coffee tables and other product lines that they now had by 90%. This meant that they could focus on quantity whilst keeping the quality high and costs down.
Tina also decided to make a group of photo collections that could be printed,but was a limited edition of 300 to 500 pieces it meant that their production capacity had now increased by nearly 1000%.
“That was a bit of a crazy time for us because we now could take on any cheat that wanted to copy our product. We could do it faster, cheaper and far better quality than even the cheats out there..” Says Jason.
“We were approached by a number of surfing organisations to do trophies for their contests. As a keen surfer myself, making trophies for Surfing Australia, Surfing QLD and Surfing NSW was a dream come true” he says.
Fast forward 13 years later and Tina and Jason have a beautiful family with 4 girls, ranging from 1 through to 10, they still work out of the factory in Machinery Drive, South Tweed Heads and they have an awesome business that has exported to at least 12 different countries around the world.
