Become A Park Ranger With Your Bachelor’s Degree

When you think of personnel shortages, you usually think of nurses or computer technicians. The last thing one would ever expect is no less than the Federal government warning that it’s also coming into a shortage of park rangers.

Yes, you did read that right. The America’s “crown jewels,” as some call them, is facing as great as a 44% labor shortage. It’s not just Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon, either. For those who like more urban settings it also includes major urban parks such as New York City’s Liberty Park and Philadelphia’s home of the Liberty Bell, Independence Park. Even more confounding is the average salary is actually quite good, at $50,000 a year. There is so much more data about degree in environmental science on the web.

If that isn’t enough, the National Park Service, the federal agency that manages these parks, says the shortage is only going to get worse. It projects that over half (55%) of its current staff of rangers will reach retirement age within the next five year. If the Service doesn’t start filling up these gaping holes, it could end up being disastrous for such public institutions as the Lincoln Memorial and even the Arch of St. Louis.

A park ranger can be divided into two key categories. The first is interpretive. These are the rangers who work as hosts to the park, explaining the historical significance of the park, helping tourists around the locale and similar ambassadorial functions. The second, more demanding type, are known as law enforcement rangers. They are on the lookout for anyone from people who befoul the environment and feeding the wildlife to being on the lookout for possible terrorist attacks. Understanding all you can about environmental health and safety degree may mean quicker success.

Those interested in becoming rangers should start by going to an on campus or online school with majors ranging anywhere from American History to Forestry and related environmental sciences. As it happens, many of the parks offer internships to college students that can either be paying positions or providing academic accreditation. Those interested in being in law enforcement can also get a degree in Criminal Justice and be considered. No matter what, one needs a Bachelor’s degree in their particular field before becoming a full-time ranger.

Salary is highly dependent on where one works as well as experience. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that salary actually does have a wide range, from $35,000 to $78,000. It also comes with standard benefits for a government employee.

Internships aren’t the only form of financial aid one can get. The National Park Service includes a list of other organizations, particularly green or environmental causes that will supply grants and or scholarships for those who are interested. If that isn’t enough, one should also sit down with a brick and mortar and/or online college’s financial aid officer about more opportunities. Looking into more information about certificate programs online will work in your favor.

No matter what, if one has a love of the outdoors, American history or both, one can’t do much better than being a park ranger. It is an occupation that may seem a bit on the unconventional side, yet has an incredible satisfaction rate for those who do.

Night Ranger’s career was certainly buttressed by MTV, which made the San Francisco Bay Area group a video staple in the early ’80s. “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me” stands as a fine piece of ’80s hair metal, with bassist Jack Blades chunk-a-chunking his pickups to create that rock-locomotive sound. The band slows things down with “Sister Christian,” a not-so-powerful power ballad that gave Night Range…
